Google is fully committed to education

ISTE 2026 Announcements

Google has made a clear choice: AI should enhance education. New tools within Google Classroom, Gemini and Chromebooks place the teacher even more at the centre, whilst pupils receive personalised support.

What does this mean in practical terms for schools and teachers? We summarise the key trends.

1. AI as a teacher’s assistant

Google is integrating Gemini directly into Google Classroom. This means that, as a teacher, you’ll receive support within your own classroom context.

This makes it easier to:

  • to develop lessons and activities
  • to gain an insight into what pupils really understand
  • to respond more quickly to needs in the classroom

In addition, so-called teacher-led AI activities are being expanded: activities in which you, as a teacher, determine what the AI does, based on your learning objectives and teaching materials.

2. Personalised learning for every pupil

One of the most striking innovations is the Study Notebooks in Gemini.

These tools:

  • automatically create personalised lessons and quizzes
  • adapt in line with learning progress
  • help pupils study in a targeted way for tests

So pupils don’t just receive a standard explanation; they are given a personalised programme that evolves as they learn.

3. Greater focus thanks to ‘Guided Learning’

Google is introducing new Guided Learning tools on Chromebooks.

Objective:

  • minimise distractions
  • to help pupils stay focused on their work

This provides the perfect solution to a well-known challenge: using technology without pupils getting lost in tabs and notifications.

4. From tools to knowledge

What is clear is the emphasis on knowledge for teachers.

The AI tools provide insight into:

  • how pupils engage with the subject matter
  • where they trip
  • what support is needed

These insights help us to differentiate more effectively and adjust our teaching accordingly.

5. AI-ready schools: support and training

Google realises that technology alone is not enough. That is why they are also focusing on:

  • AI training for teachers (Google Educator Series)
  • support for schools regarding AI strategy
  • Research into AI in assessment (in collaboration with ISTE and ASCD)

After all, successful AI integration requires vision and a professional approach.

What lessons can we learn from this?

The announcements at ISTE 2026 show a clear trend:

  • AI is being increasingly integrated into existing tools
  • the teacher remains at the heart of it all
  • Personalisation for pupils is becoming increasingly widespread
  • Data and insights are becoming more important

For schools, this does not mean an immediate revolution, but it does provide a clear direction. AI enhances good education; it is not a replacement for it.

So what now?

Now is the perfect time to experiment:

  • How can AI save you time?
  • Where might it be helpful to differentiate more effectively?
  • How can you help pupils become better at learning with AI?

We are keeping a close eye on these developments and helping to translate them into practical applications for your classroom. Interested? Book an online consultation and find out how we can support your school in its professional development.
